Write your own pun
Good puns are built, not found. Follow the four steps, then use the workshop to draft one with real wordplay words.
- Pick one narrow topicPizza beats food. A small subject gives you more specific words to play with.
- List its wordplay wordsVerbs, idioms and sound-alikes tied to the topic. For pizza: slice, crust, dough, fold.
- Find a double meaningLook for a word that means one thing in the topic and another in everyday speech. Dough is both an ingredient and money.
- End on the twistSet up the situation first and put the double-meaning word last, so the reader lands on it.
Worked example: “How do pizzas get rich? They've got plenty of dough.”
Tap a word to add it to your draft.

Pun questions, answered
What is a pun?
A pun is a joke that plays on a word with more than one meaning, or on words that sound alike. For example, “I used to hate facial hair, but then it grew on me” works because “grew on me” can mean hair growing and also learning to like something.
What is the difference between a pun and a dad joke?
A pun is a technique: wordplay built on double meanings or sound-alikes. A dad joke is a style: a clean, groan-worthy joke told with a straight face. Most dad jokes are puns, but not every pun is a dad joke.
